Makeup Tips for Women of Color!
We believe your makeup should enhance your natural beauty, not hide it.
These tips may help:
For the most complementary look, start with a good foundation. What we usually see with darker skin is that it's hard to match their color and most people use a makeup that's too red-based or too light and you can see a color difference between the face and neck. A lot of makeup artists will tell you that yellow-based foundations work best for women with darker skin, but we believe you want to make the face look more brown/beige than brown/red or brown/yellow. It's very important to know how to mix custom blend foundation to prevent adding unwanted tones. Stick with the right palette. Knowing your skin's undertones is important for choosing the right makeup colors for you. Women of color have undertones in their skin that range from cool, neutral or warm. When you know what your undertones are, you're better able to select makeup colors that are most compatible with your skin tone. The goal is to see the makeup disappear after applying it on your skin, with no visible boundary between while at the same time covering any unwanted pigments and blemishes. Test foundation colors and check how they look in natural light if possible. If you want to add more color for contour, you can play with different blushes and bronzers for highlight and contrast. A touch of shimmer in your blush will highlight cheekbones nicely.
Go bold if you want to! One of the great things about having a deep complexion is being able to wear bold shades that can overpower women with fairer skin. This includes green, purple, brown, blue, or pink makeup. Just be sure you wear these bright colors sparingly; select a feature to draw attention to and focus on that, leaving the rest of your face more neutral. Mixing two complimentary colors like gold and purple can boost the drama factor. However, use bold shades with a light touch, to get a fresh look rather than a caked one. Don't go too dark. Even if you have a very dark complexion, you don't have to stick to dark makeup colors. In fact, this can make your entire look too drab or boring. Experiment with various shades, even colors you thought weren't right for you. Spend an afternoon at our salon and let us expertly apply various colors on your face to see which ones you like. Accentuate eyes with different shades of brown or black eyeliner. Black mascara will make eyelashes stand out. For that little extra pizzazz, try false eyelashes.
Focus on your best features. What do you love best about your face? If you love your eyes, wear an attention-getting eyeshadow and few coats of mascara. If your lips are your best feature, wear a bright shade of lipstick. Lipliner should match your lipstick color as closely as possible to avoid a dark outline. Lipliner is not there to draw attention to itself, its job is to contain your lipstick so that it doesn't feather and bleed. Earth tones, neutrals, pinks and dark burgundy instantly add glam to lips. For a more natural look, lightly apply some lip-gloss.
